Question & Answer

Why choose Maritime Labels & Packaging?

We are a family owned and operated company specializing in pressure sensitive label production and other printed products. Founded in 1970 with offerings of quality prepress services and custom printing plates, Maritime Labels & Packaging has grown to include pressure sensitive labels and other printed products to help its customers improve their product presentation and grow their business. We specialize in small to large order quantities including multiple SKUs, excellent print quality, and label serialization.

What are my color options?

Maritime Labels & Packaging specializes in four color process printing (CMYK), converting all input colors into percentages of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black inks. This is the printing process used for many printed materials in the market. Additional five, six, and seven color process printing (CMYKOVG) is available which allows for a wider gamut of color representation. White ink can be printed and is used when your job is printed on clear, metalized, or other custom materials requiring a white point. Other spot color inks are available which can include Pantone or PMS spot colors, although most customers will be satisfied by CMYK conversions. Be aware that Pantone spot colors contained in a graphics file will automatically adjust to best represent the Pantone spot color ink. These should only be included if you have this intent, otherwise they should be converted from Spot to Process swatches.

Can you print gold, silver or other metallic colors?

A metallic ink appearance can easily be achieved by combining mixtures of process colour on top of reflective silver surfaces. Your design can include gold, silver, or virtually any other metallic appearing color. We’ll use white ink in areas where solid color is intended. This process is commonly used to mimic hot or cold foiling or spot gold and silver ink printing.

What about color consistency?

Every job is considered to be color critical. The digital presses have built-in methods to constantly monitor and adjust color reproduction throughout every day. These checks and balances ensure the most accurate color reproduction is being achieved from run to run and you can expect your first job is the same as your most recent order. Through this process, color reproduction is found to be within acceptable industry standard Delta E tolerances.

Are there minimum order quantities?

Simply put, there aren’t any. We’ve produced as few as 1 and as many as 500,000 labels in a single order. What’s even better, you can combine multiple designs (or SKUs) of the same specifications in one total order quantity, helping to save you money.

Are there printing plate charges?

No. It would not be fair to charge you for printing plates when we don’t use them. Add variable data to your job making each and every label unique in a cost effective manner. In the rare instance that a spot varnish coating is required for post-marking the finished labels or visual effect, you may incur a varnish plate charge.

What sizes and shapes are available?

We offer a large selection of stock shapes and sizes. The list of stock shapes and sizes is available here and you can download stock die templates. There is also a wide selection of special shapes available – just ask us for more information to help choose something that meets your needs. If you need assistance, just let us know the exact dimensions and shape and we’ll work with you on finding something that works for your needs or quote a custom size.

How do I measure my container for the label size?

We recommend labeling only the continuous flat surfaces of a container. Dynamic changes to a surfaces requires a special shape and may experience bubbles or appear crooked in the application process. Boxes: simply measure the flat panel surface and subtract a minimum of 1/8″ or more to accomodate wiggle room when applying it. Bottles / cylinders: Measure the height of the flat surface and subtract a minimim of 1/8″ or more. For width, use a flexible tape measurer to measure the circumference (or, if you know the diameter, multiply it by 3.14). Subtract 1/8″ to allow a gap or add 1/8″ to add an overlap. We specify label dimensions in terms of “across” and “around.” In the above examples, the “across” dimension is the height of the label and the “around” dimension is the width. We welcome you to send us your packaging and we’ll measure it out for you!

What types of material can you print on?

There are only a handful of materials we cannot print on. Most materials can be prepped for digital printing, or choose from our core set of materials including 60# semi-gloss paper, white polypropylene, clear polypropylene, silver polypropylene, silver paper, Estate #4, and Classic Crest. Complement the printed surface with gloss lamination, matte lamination, gloss varnish, or satin varnish finishes. These core products also include a variety of adhesives.

What kind of proof will I receive?

Most of our customers are happy with receiving a PDF file. It shows placement and general color characteristics of the label content. Because every computer and PDF software program is different, it represents a general representation of color. Alternatively, we offer press proofs for an additional fee which will represent the final printed product for color, substrate, and finish.

Will my order be produced on rolls?

It’s your choice. Your order is produced on a digital web press, meaning the raw material is rollstock. By default, most jobs maintain a roll format. Rollstock labels are easier to handle, store, and adapt for either hand or machine application. If you’d like to have your job supplied in pieces or sheets, we can do that, too!

What are the “unwind” directions?

There are eight unwind directions which describe how the labels come off of a roll. Unwinds are typically important only for automatic and semi-automatic (machine) applications. Hand applications may have preferred unwinds, but are not critical for the end use. Please be sure to specify if your job has a required unwind in order to ensure it is compatible with your application method.
